Simmons Hanly Conroy hosted the first Miles for Meso race in 2009. Since then, the firm has continued to be the national presenting sponsor of the event, helping to raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos. The flagship Miles for Meso 5K race in Alton, Illinois takes place at Simmons Hanly Conroy’s national headquarters, providing a place for the mesothelioma community to gather and support one another.
As a mesothelioma law firm, Simmons Hanly Conroy would like nothing more than to see the eradication of mesothelioma and other asbestos-related illnesses. The firm’s position as the national presenting sponsor helps make Miles for Meso possible year after year, raising thousands of dollars for research and awareness.
Since the first Miles for Meso in 2009, race participants have run or walked a total of 38,000 miles, and the event has raised over $952,500 for mesothelioma research. The race has become a fun, family-friendly way to raise awareness about mesothelioma and the dangers of asbestos.
Organizations that have received these funds are the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (The Meso Foundation), and PENN Medicine’s mesothelioma program.
Join us at the next event virtually and in Alton, IL on Sept. 20, 2025.
“Why would a law firm want to donate money to a research program and eventually find a cure for a disease that they litigate, and it’s quite profitable? I think it just speaks that they go beyond that. They believe in the human spirit.”
– Mary Hesdorffer, Executive Director of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation
The flagship Miles for Meso race takes place in Alton, Illinois every September to coincide with National Mesothelioma Awareness Day.
After losing her husband Alan to mesothelioma, ADAO President and Co-Founder Linda Reinstein knows firsthand what so many families have gone through — the sadness, the loss and, ultimately, the outrage at it all being preventable.
Each year at Miles for Meso, Linda looks forward to joining a community of mesothelioma survivors and warriors to raise awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure and walk together with a shared experience and purpose.
“Miles for Meso has been an amazing resource for ADAO,” Linda explained. “You bring a community together and we talk about our stories, so they can understand and connect the nearly invisible dust to the damages it impacts on our families.”
Following the first race in Alton, Illinois, families and friends of mesothelioma victims across the country began showing interest in hosting races of their own.
Since then, the race has gone national. Eleven states have held races, of which Simmons Hanly Conroy is honored to be the presenting sponsor.
