About the Exactech Recall 2021

The Exactech recall started in August 2021, when the company announced an issue with the packaging of their ankle and knee replacement devices. The vacuum bags containing the devices lacked a second barrier layer with ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), which helps to provide oxygen resistance.

Over time, exposure to oxygen can cause the implant material to wear down and potentially break, causing bone loss, pain and other injuries.

In addition to the recalled ankle and knee replacements, Exactech has also recalled their Connexion GXL acetabular polyethylene liners, a key part of their orthopedic hip replacements. These liners can also break down prematurely and cause injuries.

Health Risks of Faulty Exactech Implants

When an Exactech implant breaks down, it can cause the device to loosen or fail, leading to potentially severe symptoms.

Health issues from defective Exactech ankle, hip, knee replacement products may include:

  • Bone fracturing
  • Clicking, grinding, popping, or other noises
  • Dislocations
  • Inability to bear weight
  • Instability in the knee, ankle, or hip
  • New or worsening pain
  • Osteolysis (bone degeneration)
  • Premature wear or device failure
  • Swelling

These health problems are often so severe that revision surgery is needed to correct the issue — but revision surgery comes with risks of its own.

Not only can revision surgery cost thousands, this kind of invasive surgery can cause infection, nerve damage and more. Recovery may take months and require physical therapy, even in the best cases.

You didn’t deserve this — but you may have legal options to hold Exactech accountable for your injuries and help cover the costs of lost wages and medical expenses.
